In late August, local talk turns to the dwindling days of summer, the daily hunting season countdown, predictions about the upcoming winter and the Iron County Fair. This four-day event invites Iron County residents and visitors alike to explore a wide variety of activities at the county fairgrounds in Iron River. At night, you can take the entire family to the 4×4 truck pull or the always fun, demolition derby. Below is a schedule of events:

Are you a off-road enthusiasts and want to enjoy the trails, just don’t want to spend the money on the ORV permits for just a day ride? Well I have good news for you! On August 20 – 21, 2016 the DNR is inviting people to enjoy the trails for free.
Free ORV Weekend, Aug. 20-21, 2016
During this weekend, Michigan residents and nonresidents can legally ride DNR – designated routes and trails without purchasing an ORV licence or trail permit. Riders will be saving up to $36.25.
Where to ride
During the free ORV weekend, Michigan residents and nonresidents can ride DNR- designated routes and trails without purchasing an ORV licence or trail permit. The weekend also includes the use of the state’s five scramble areas, including St. Helen’s Motosport Area, Black Lake Scramble Area, Silver Lake Bull Gap and The Mounds.
Rules and Regulations
During Free ORV Weekend, all ORV rules and laws still apply. Riders should remember that:
- Operators under age 16 must have a valid safety training certificate. Michigan will accept ORV/ATV education certifications that are issued by other states and provinces.
- Operators and passengers must wear a U.S. Dept. of Transportation-approved crash helmet and protective eyewear.
